How Minerva Went to UlyssesAid
At the end of Ulyssesseventh year on the island of Ogygia, the goddess Minerva, who had always been friendly towrds the hero, begged the king of the gods to allow him to proceed homeward homeward adj. Jupiter agreed to do so,and a messenger was sent to Calypso to tell her that she must set Ulysses free.Calypso dared not disobey;she allowed her guest to build a boat, and once more he set sail upon the seas. But Neptune,Ulyssesgreat enemy, did not long leave him in peace;he sent a storm which wrecked the boat, and Ulysses clung to the drifting wreckage for nineteen days.At the end of that time he was cast up on the shore of the island of Scheria, where dwelt a people called the Phaeaces.Ulysses crawled into a thicket near the shore, and there he fell into an immediate and deep sleep.
While Ulysses was asleep on the shore, just at a spot where a clear river ran out into the sea,Minerva made her way to the palace of Alcinous, king of the Phaeaces.she went straight to the apartment where Nausicaa, the king’s lovely daughter, lay sleeping, and passing through the closed doors she approached the bed.Not wishing to frighten the girl she took on the shape of one of Nausicaas playfellows, and bent over the bed to whisper:
“Nausicaa, bestir bestir vt.激励,使忙碌yourself.I have walked through the apartments of this palace, and everywhere I have seen fine clothing lying about dirty and neglected.Who knows how soon it will be needed? For even though you have as yet seen no man worthy to be your husband,no one doubts that you will soon be married. On your weding day you will need clean raiment for yourself and your bridesmaids,as well as linen for the the friends of the bridegroom. Why not get up early in the morning and take all the soiled clothes to the washingpools? There you will be able to clean them, and bring them back home to set aside for your bridal day.”
After Minerva had said these words she disappeared, and Nausicaa awoke, wondering much at her strange dream. She dressed in all haste and immediately sought out her father. She laid her hand upon his arm, blushing a little and dropping her eyes as she did so.
“Dear father,I wonder if you would do something for me.I have made up my mind to collect together all the dirty clothing in the house, and take it down to the washingpools. Will you ask the servants to provide me with a wagon and mules?I am really ashamed of the way the linen is neglected garments of your own, too, and of my brothers! It is high time we had a washing day—and my maids and I are the persons to undertake the work.”
Her father looked at Nausicaa and smiled. He did not wonder at his daughter’s sudden concern for the family linen, for he realized that she was too shy to speak of her own marriage. He replied soberly:
“Gertainly, little one—you can have anything you ask for.Go and make yourself ready, and I will give orders for a wagon and mules to be brought to the door.”
So Nausicaa went to Arete, her mother,to tell her of her purpose;and Arete smiled too,and said she would pack a box of provisions provision n.供应,(一批)供应品,预备,防备,规定for her daughter to take with her. Then, when Nausicaas maids had loaded on to the wagon all the linen they could find, the princess herself mounted the drivingseat, and the mules started of at walking pace, while the girls followed behind on foot.
Soon they came to a place where a clear river ran out into the sea,and the mulecart was brought to a halt. The girls lifted the linen from the cart and carried it down to the water. Here they trampled the linen on the bed of the stream, and then rinsed rinse v. 嗽洗,漂洗,漂清,冲洗each garment to remove the last of the dirt. When this was done, they set out the garments garment n.衣服,外衣,外表along the seabeach to dry.
After they had bathed themselves, they opened the box of provisions and sat down to enjoy their meal.At the end of the meal Nausicaa sprang up,and proposed a game of ball on the sands.
The maidens gave eager assent assent n.赞成vi.同意,and the game began.Lovely as the other girls were,Nausicaa shone out from among them with a loveliness which was peculiarly her own.Her swift limbs might have been the envy of the goddess Diana;her tender body had been washed by soft seas to the smoothness of a rounded stone;her laughing face caught and threw back the soft blue of the sky.She ran to and fro in her white robe, laughing and singing, quite ignorant of the fact that within a few paces of her the mighty mighty n. Ulysses lay asleep.
