On Hearing...

On Hearing a Monk from Shu Playing His Lute

On Hearing a Monk from Shu Playing His Lute

Li Bai

A Monk from Shu comes down from Mount Emei

In the west, bringing with him a lute green.

While for me he is plucking strings to play

Valleys seem to roar with pine storms within

And a flowing stream seems to wash my heart,

Leaving trailing sounds to the autumn bell.

Soon to come o’er green mounts dusk has its start;

And autumn clouds in their darkness quite swell.
