Looking at the Painting of Steeds by General Cao in
Recorder Wei Feng’s House
Du Fu
Since the Dynasty’s birth, Jiandu Prince, the artist,
In painting horse with magic art, has led the list.
But General Cao has won his fame for thirty years;
The real steed Chenghuang once more to the world appears.
He drew the late Emperor’s horse Shine-the-Night-Bright
That made pool dragons for ten days with bolts take to flight.
A Jieyu passed to a Cairen the Emperor’s mandate:
From inner-store be taken the red agate plate.
The general knelt, danced and went back with the gift,
Followed by men gorgeously dressed at a speed swift.
Influential officials don’t think their screens bright
Unless there’re General’s drawings thereon in sight.
Emperor Taizong once had a curling-hair steed.
Now, Guo’s Lion-Patterned is also of rare breed.
On his new paintings, appear two horses the same;
Once again they make connoisseurs long exclaim.
In battles they are steeds one against ten thousand;
On the white silk, they seem to stir up wind and sand.
The seven others are all excellent also;
Looked from afar, they’re like from heaven mist and snow.
Their hoofs tread on roads with catalpa trees alongside;
Many are horsemen and grooms that stand side by side.
See how the lovely nine compete for magic charm;
Staring at the clear and high, they look deep and calm.
Who loves rare horses with all his heart, do you know?
Formerly, it was Zhidun; it is Weifeng now.
When the late Emperor went to Xinfeng Palace,
Fluttered east his flags and banners the sky to kiss;
Thirty thousand steeds galloped with elegant grace.
All of as strong build as those the painting displays.
Since the river god the treasure presented got,
There was in the river no more flood-dragon shot.
See you not before Jinsu Tombs amid pine trees
Gone are superb steeds and birds’ cries in the wind ne’er cease!
