Oh, what a wonderful arguing competition it was! The scene of the competition is still fresh in my mind.

When I was a college student, I had the honour of seeing a wonderful arguing competition.

The competition was held in the auditorium auditorium n.听众席, 观众席, <美>会堂, 礼堂 of our college on a Saturday evening.

It was entitled “Is the Home for the Aged More Good than Harm, or on the Contrary in Our Country?” The auditorium was full of audience that evening. Most of them were college students. The contestants of both sides were all from senior classes. Each side was composed of three contestants. They sat opposite to each other on the two sides of the platformplatform n.(车站)月台, 讲台, 讲坛. The judges of the competition kept their seats in the front row.

No sooner had the man presiding at the competition pronunced the beginning of the competition than the audience in the auditorum turned to silence.

At first, the No.I contestants of both sides briefly stated the basic arguments argument n.争论, 辩论, 论据, 论点, ~ (for,against), 意见 of the two sides respectively respectively adv. Then, the competition moved step by step to the stage in the heat of the debate.

The basic arguments of the affirmative affirmative adj.肯定的, (对正式辩论中的问题)表示赞成的, (态度, 方法等)积极的, 乐观的, 怀有希望的 side might be briefly summed up as:

A) The home for the aged was the result of social development. Therefore, it was more good than harm;

B) The home for the aged helped free sons and daughters from the heavy load of looking after their old parents so that they could dedicate more energy and time to their own work. Therefore, the home for the aged helped to liberate the labour force of the society and to develop the productive forces;

C) The home for the aged helped old people free of the loneliness loneliness n.孤独, 寂寞 of old man because in the home for the aged they could share the common languages of the old people among themselves.

The contestants on the negative side based their arguments on the following:

正方的基本论点可以简要概括为:

A) 养老院是社会进步的产物,因此,它利大于弊;

B) 养老院有助于将子女们从照顾老年父母的繁重负担中解放出来,使他们能够把更多的精力和时间用于自己的工作。因此,敬老院有助于解放社会劳动力,有助于发展生产力;

A)The home for the aged enabled sons and daughters to shirk shirk vt.逃避 their obligation to sustain and look after their old parents. Therefore, it was the result of demoralization demoralization n.道德败坏, 纪律松弛, 士气消沉 in ethical morals;

B)The old people in the home for the aged were deprived of the amusementfrom the family. Therefore, it was against the Chinese traditionary ethics;

C) The homes for the aged in many places were poorly managed. Many old people didnt really feel happy there.

When the No.Ⅱ contestant on the negative side took the offensive against his opponent by saying that many young men hoped to send their old father or mother to the home for the aged because they were reluctant to take the responsibility of looking after their old parents, the No.Ⅱ contestant on the affirmative side refuted the argument at once.

A) 养老院使子女们得以逃避赡养和照顾老人的义务,因此,它是伦理道德堕落的产物;

B) 老年人在养老院里被剥夺了天伦之乐,因此,它有悖中国传统的伦理道德准则;

“How can a young man manage to make greater contributions to the construction of his motherland if he devotes most of his time and energy to looking after his old parents and child?” He asked. His words won the applause applause n.鼓掌欢迎, 欢呼 of the audience in no time.

“But thats just the best excuse for some young men to shirk the obligation of sustaining and looking after the old.”

The No. Ⅱ contestant on the negative side argued back quickly, not to wait for the end of the applause. “Why not think about the problem from the view of the old?”
