Just for today I will be agreeable. I willlook as well as I can, dress becomingly, talklow, act courteously, criticize not one bit,and try not to improve or regulate anybodybut myself.
Just for today I will be unafraid.
Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy whatis beautiful, and to believe that as I give tothe world,so the world will give to me.

“Now let’s check it with the second sieve,” Grandpa Hodge went on,“If the news youwill tell me is not true,it should be friendly.”
The man hesitantly answered,“No,just the other way round.”
Grandpa Hodge once again interrupted him,“So let’s use the third sieve. Can you tell meif the news that is exciting you is very important?”

Susan’s Magic Carpet
By Karen TaylorWrinkles of confusion rippledacross Holly’s forehead as sheunwrapped the gift from her bestfriend,Susan.
“I...I thought you could use itfor something.” Susan’s stammeredexplanation did nothing to helpus understand why a twelve-byeighteen-inch dark blue carpetremnant was being presented as abirthday gift.
Starting out at a new school during her freshman year had been a difficult adjustment.
Until she met Susan,Holly had experienced little success making new friends.
The murmured “thanks” was barely audible as Holly tried valiantly not to allow herdisappointment to show. The extent of Holly’s disappointment over the incident didn’t becomeevident until the following evening when she came downstairs to say good night. “Well,Iguess we know how much my best friend thinks of me,huh,Mom?” Her attempt at a breezytone failed miserably.
The next morning,I saw Susan’s carpet lying among the other discarded items. Hesitatinga moment,I reached in and plucked it from amid the debris. After giving it a light brushing,Ibrought it into the house and tucked it away in the hall closet. Overshadowed by the businessof daily living, the carpet was soon forgotten.
