The banking business is undergoing areform. The leaders in this field have almost entirelylost the confidence of the public. Already thebankers have sensed the need of reform, and theyhave begun it.
Third. Industry calls for new leaders. The old typeof leaders thought and moved in terms of dividendsinstead of thinking and moving in terms of humanequations! The future leader in industry, to endure, must regard himself as a quasi-public official whoseduty it is to manage his trust in such a way that itwill work hardship on no individual, or group ofindividuals. Exploitation of working men is a thingof the past. Let the man who aspires to leadership inthe field of business, industry, and labor rememberthis.
Fourth. The religious leader of the future will beforced to give more attention to the temporal needsof his followers, in the solution of their economicand personal problems of the present, and lessattention to the dead past, and the yet unborn future.
Fifth. In the professions of law, medicine, andeducation, a new brand of leadership, and to someextent, new leaders will become a necessity. This isespecially true in the field of education. The leaderin that field must, in the future, find ways and meansof teaching people HOW TO APPLY the knowledgethey receive in school. He must deal more withPRACTICE and less with THEORY.
Sixth. New leaders will be required in the field ofJournalism. Newspapers of the future, to be conductedsuccessfully, must be divorced from “special privilege”
and relieved from the subsidy of advertising. Theymust cease to be organs of propaganda for theinterests which patronize their advertising columns.
The type of newspaper which publishes scandaland lewd pictures will eventually go the way of allforces which debauch the human mind.
These are but a few of the fields in which opportunitiesfor new leaders and a new brand of leadership arenow available. The world is undergoing a rapidchange. This means that the media through whichthe changes in human habits are promoted, must beadapted to the changes. The media here described, are the ones which, more than any others, determinethe trend of civilization.
WHEN AND HOW TO APPLY FOR
A POSITION
The information described here is the net result ofmany years of experience during which thousandsof men and women were helped to market theirservices effectively. It can, therefore, be relied uponas sound and practical.
MEDIA THROUGH WHICH SERVICES
MAY BE MARKETED
Experience has proved that the following mediaoffer the most direct and effective methods ofbringing the buyer and seller of personal servicestogether.
1. EMPLOYMENT BUREAUS. Care must be taken to select only reputable bureaus, the management ofwhich can show adequate records of achievementof satisfactory results. There are comparatively fewsuch bureaus.
2. ADVERTISING in newspapers, trade journals, magazines, and radio. Classified advertising mayusually be relied upon to produce satisfactoryresults in the case of those who apply for clericalor ordinary salaried positions. Display advertisingis more desirable in the case of those who seekexecutive connections, the copy to appear in thesection of the paper which is most apt to come tothe attention of the class of employer being sought.
The copy should be prepared by an expert, whounderstands how to inject sufficient selling qualitiesto produce replies.
3. PERSONAL LETTERS OF APPLICATION, directedto particular firms or individuals most apt to needsuch services as are being offered. Letters shouldbe neatly typed, ALWAYS, and signed by hand.
With the letter, should be sent a complete “brief”
or outline of the applicant’s qualifications. Both theletter of application and the brief of experience orqualifications should be prepared by an expert. (Seeinstructions as to information to be supplied).
4 . APPLICATION THROUGH PERSONAL
ACQUAINTANCES. When possible, the applicant should endeavor to approach prospective employersthrough some mutual acquaintance. This method ofapproach is particularly advantageous in the case ofthose who seek executive connections and do notwish to appear to be “peddling” themselves.
5. APPLICATION IN PERSON. In some in-stances,it may be more effective if the applicant offerspersonally, his services to prospective employers,in which event a complete written statement ofqualifications for the position should be presented, for the reason that prospective employers often wishto discuss with associates, one’s record.
INFORMATION TO BE SUPPLIED IN
A WRITFEN “BRIEF”
This brief should be prepared as carefully as alawyer would prepare the brief of a case to be triedm court. Unless the applicant is experienced inthe preparation of such briefs, an expert should beconsulted, and his services enlisted for this purpose.
Successful merchants employ men and women whounderstand the art and the psychology of advertisingto present the merits of their merchandise. One whohas personal services for sale should do the same. Thefollowing information should appear in the brief:
1. Education. State briefly, but definitely, whatschooling you have had, and in what subjects youspecialized in school, giving the reasons for thatspecialization.
2. Experience. If you have had experience in connection with positions similar to the one youseek, describe it fully, state names and addresses offormer employers. Be sure to bring out clearly anyspecial experience you may have had which wouldequip you to fill the position you seek.
3. References. Practically every business firmdesires to know all about the previous records, antecedents, etc., of prospective employees whoseek positions of responsibility. Attach to your briefphotostatic copies of letters from:
a. Former employers
b. Teachers under whom you studied
c. Prominent people whose judgement may be relied upon.
4. Photograph of self. Attach to your brief arecent, unmounted photograph of yourself.
5. Apply for a specific position. Avoid application fora position without describing EXACTLY what particularposition you seek. Never apply for “just a position.”
That indicates you lack specialized qualifications.
6. State your qualifications for the particularposition for which you apply. Give full detailsas to the reason you believe you are qualified forthe particular position you seek. This is THEAPPLICATION. It will determine, more than anythingelse, what consideration you receive.
7. Offer to go to work on probation. In the majorityof instances if you are determined to have the positionfor which you apply, it will be most effective ifyou offer to work for a week, or a month, or for asufficient length of time to enable your prospectiveemployer to judge your value WITHOUT PAY. Thismay appear to be a radical suggestion, but experiencehas proved that it seldom fails to win at least a trial.
