The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) (Danish: K.benhavns Universitet) is the oldest and second largest university and research institution in Denmark. The University of Copenhagen was inaugurated on June 1st 1479, after King Christian I was granted approval for its establishment by Pope Sixtus IV. Between the closing of the Studium Generale in Lund in 1536 and the establishment of the University of Aarhus in the late 1920s, it was the only university in Denmark. Based on a German model, the university consisted of four faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine and Philosophy. It is the second oldest institution for higher education in Scandinavia after Uppsala University (1477). The university is a central part of Copenhagen and has four campus areas in the city: North Campus, City Campus, South Campus and Frederiksberg Campus. A tradition at the university is the “Friday bar”, which is a social event organised by students at each department. It gives students (and staff) an opportunity to socialise. In front of the university five busts on stands are placed of former scholars from different faculties of the university, of which one is the Danish Nobel Prize award winner in Physics 1922, Niels Bohr. Today the university is a modern leader in academic research and education, inspired by the surrounding city of Copenhagen, which is striving to become the symbol of sustainable cities for the 21st century.
System: The University of Copenhagen currently has six faculties including Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science (In 2012, the former Faculty of Life Sciences and Faculty of Science merged into a new Faculty of Science), Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Theology. Most courses are taught in Danish; however, many courses are also offered in English and a few in German.
City show: Copenhagen is situated on the islands of Zealand and Amager. It has been recognized as one of the cities with the best quality of life. It is also considered one of the world’s most environmentally-friendly cities. It is considered as one of the happiest countries in the world. It is a gloriously attractive city, with its maze of cobbled streets (including the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe) and ancient churches, palaces and government buildings, alongside brave and striking modern interjections such as the ferociously angled extension to the Royal Library, nicknamed the Black Diamond, and Henning Larsen"s Royal Opera House. the Little Mermaid Denmark is the most prominent sculpture by Edvard Eriksen and has become quite well known as one of the defining symbols of Copenhagen. Denmark is a nation of bikes, and Copenhagen is famous for its free city bikes.
