“Have you got the tinderbox？” asked the witch.
“你取到了打火匣没有？”巫婆问。
“No. I declare I quite forgot it.” So he went back and fetched the tinderbox， and then the witch drew him up out of the tree， and he stood again in the high road， with his pockets， his knapsack， his cap， and his boots full of gold.
“没有，我把它忘得一干二净。”他只好又走下去，把打火匣取来。巫婆把他拉了出来。所以他如今又站在大路上了。他的衣袋、皮靴、行军袋、帽子，都被钱盛满了。
“What are you going to do with the tinderbox？” asked the soldier.
“你要这旧打火匣有什么用呢？”兵士问。
“That is nothing to you，” replied the witch， “you have the money， now give me the tinderbox.”
“这和你没有什么关系，”巫婆反驳他说，“你已经得到钱——你只消把打火匣交给我好了。”
“I tell you what，” said the soldier， “if you dont tell me what you are going to do with it， I will draw my sword and cut off your head.”
“废话！”兵士说。“你要它有什么用，请你立刻告诉我。不然我就抽出剑来，砍掉你的头。”
“No，” said the witch.
“我可不能够告诉你！”巫婆说。
The soldier immediately cut off her head， and there she lay on the ground. Then he tied up all his money in her apron. and slung it on his back like a bundle， put the tinderboxtinderbox n.火绒箱， 易燃物， 潜伏着暴乱或战争危险的人 in his pocket， and walked off to the nearest town. It was a very nice town， and he put up at the best inn， and ordered a dinner of all his favorite dishes， for now he was rich and had plenty of money.

The servant， who cleaned his boots， thought they certainly were a shabby pair to be worn by such a rich gentleman， for he had not yet bought any new ones. The next day， however， he procuredprocure v.获得， 取得 some good clothes and proper boots， so that our soldier soon became known as a fine gentleman， and the people visited him， and told him all the wonders that were to be seen in the town， and of the kings beautiful daughter， the princess.

“Where can I see her？” asked the soldier.
“在什么地方可以见到她呢？”兵士问。
“She is not to be seen at all，” they said， “she lives in a large copper castle， surrounded by walls and towers. No one but the king himself can pass in or out， for there has been a prophecy that she will marry a common soldier， and the king cannot bear to think of such a marriage.”
“谁也不能见到她，”大家异口同声道。“她住在一幢宽大的铜宫里，周围有好几道墙和好几座塔。只有国王本人才能在那儿自由地进出，因为从前曾经有过一个预言，说她将和一个普通的士兵结婚，这可叫国王忍受不了。”
“I should like very much to see her，” thought the soldier， but he could not obtainobtain vt.获得， 得到 permission to do so. However， he passed a very pleasant time. went to the theatre， drove in the kings garden， and gave a great deal of money to the poor， which was very good of him， he remembered what it had been in olden times to be without a shilling.
“我倒很想看看她呢，”兵士想。不过他得不到许可。他现在生活得很是愉快，常常到戏院去看戏，逛逛国王的花园，送许多钱给穷苦的人们。这是一种良好的行为，因为他自己早就体会到，没有钱是多么可怕的事！
Now he was rich， had fine clothes， and many friends， who all declared he was a fine fellow and a real gentleman， and all this gratified him exceedingly. But his money would not last forever， and as he spent and gave away a great deal daily， and received none， he found himself at last with only two shillings left. So he was obliged to leave his elegant rooms， and live in a little garret under the roof， where he had to clean his own boots， and even mend them with a large needle. None of his friends came to see him， there were too many stairs to mount up. One dark evening， he had not even a penny to buy a candle， then all at once he remembered that there was a piece of candle stuck in the tinderbox， which he had brought from the old tree， into which the witch had helped him.

He found the tinderbox， but no sooner had he struck a few sparks from the flint and steel， than the door flew open and the dog with eyes as big as teacups， whom he had seen while down in the tree， stood before him， and said， “What orders， master？”
他把那个打火匣和蜡烛头取出来。当他在火石上擦了一下，冒出火星来的时候，房门忽然自动地开了，他在树底下所看到的那条眼睛有茶杯大的狗儿就在他的面前出现了。它说：“我的主人，您要吩咐我什么？”
“Hallo，” said the soldier， “well this is a pleasant tinderbox， if it brings me all I wish for.”
兵士说：“这是怎么一回事儿？这真是一个奇怪的打火匣。如果我能这样得到我想要的东西才好呢！”
“Bring me some money，” said he to the dog.
“替我去弄几个钱来吧！”他对狗儿说。
He was gone in a moment， and presently returned， carrying a large bag of coppers in his month. The soldier very soon discovered after this the value of the tinderbox. If he struck the flint once， the dog who sat on the chest of copper money made his appearance， if twice， the dog came from the chest of silver， and if three times， the dog with eyes like towers， who watched over the gold. The soldier had now plenty of money， he returned to his elegantelegant adj.文雅的， 端庄的， 雅致的， 第一流的 rooms， and reappeared in his fine clothes， so that his friends knew him again directly， and made as much of him as before.
于是“嘘”的一声，狗儿就不见了。不一会儿，又是“嘘”的一声，狗儿嘴里叼着一大口袋的钱回来了。现在士兵才知道这是一个多么奇妙的打火匣。只要他把它擦一下，那只狗儿就来了，坐在盛有铜钱的箱子上。如果他擦它两下，那只有银子的狗儿就来了。假如他擦三下，那只有金子的狗儿就出现了。现在这个兵士又搬到那几间华美的房间里去住了，又穿起漂亮的衣服来了。他所有的朋友马上又认得他了，而且还十分关心他起来。
After a while he began to think it was very strange that no one could get a look at the princess. “Every one says she is very beautiful，” thought he to himself， “but what is the use of that if she is to be shut up in a copper castle surrounded by so many towers. Can I by any means get to see her. Stop！ where is my tinderbox？” Then he struck a light， and in a moment the dog， with eyes as big as teacups， stood before him.
有一次他心里想：“人们不能去看那位公主，也可算是一桩怪事。人们都说她很美：不过，要是她老是独住在那有许多塔楼的铜宫里，那有什么意思呢？难道我就看不到她一眼吗？——我的打火匣在哪里？”他擦出火星，马上“嘘”的一声，那条眼睛像茶杯一样的狗儿便跳出来了。
“It is midnight，” said the soldier， “yet I should very much like to see the princess， if only for a moment.”
“已经是半夜了，一点也不错，”兵士说。“不过我倒非常想看一下那位公主哩，哪怕一会儿也好。”
