Wang Hao and Wang Liqin, two of Chinas top table tennis players, both saw the World Table Tennis Championships as a chance to prove themselves. But there was only one champion and Wang Hao, 25, won it last Tuesday in Yokohama, Japan.

Wang Hao, who won the mens doubles title with Chen Qi last Monday, played with spirit to beat Wang Liqin 119, 1311, 115, 119.

Wang Hao said it was his mental toughness1 that made the difference. “I was disappointed by my performances in past championships and the last two Olympic Games. But I have tried to pull myself together and prepared well. This is the result.”

Wang Hao said he has always understood the importance of physical training and technical skills. Now he knows the need for mental preparation as well. Having two Olympic silvers had left him feeling bitter2. The bitterness perhaps explains why he has not always played at his best in the past.

“Ive come to understand that you can learn important lessons from failure,” he said. “Losing can build your character and make you a stronger player.” His next goal, or dream, is to win the gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012.

Liu Guoliang, head coach of Chinas table tennis team, sang the praises of Wang Haos victory. “This is just the beginning of his rise,” said Liu. “Its the confidencebooster3 he needs to make further progress.”

Katerina won the Beijing Games, first gold medal on the opening day of competition, tying a world record in womens air rifle. The enduring1 image afterward was one of the beaming winners cheek to cheek to check with her beaming husband. Five days later, she silvered in womens threeposition rifle.

She was there for him just as Matt Emmons was there for her, his wife Katerina, a few days earlier. He shot. She sat several dozens of yards away at the Beijing Shooting Rang Hall. For the second straight Olympic, Matt Emmons lost a gold medal with a stunning mistake on the final shot in the 50meter 3position rifle.

The American was in front and needed only to come somewhere close to the centre of his target. But he fired poorly on his final attempt, giving the gold to Chinas Qiu Jian .

Four years ago, Emmons won the mens prone2 position competition in Athens in 2004.He and Katerina werent married yet. In fact, they hadnt met. They did because of a monumental slipup in his second gold all but won at that time. But on his final threeposition shot, needing little more than to hit the target to wrap it up, he aimed at the target to the right of his, squeezed the trigger3 and gave the medal away.

Among the many people who offered words of encouragement that day was a young Czech shooter named Katerina Kurkova. One thing led to another and, the following June, they were married.

“If I was the reader and if I had a newspaper, I would like to read about somebody else like that,” Katerina said, smiling, “Its a pretty good story.”

Ed Viesturs grew up in Rockford, Illinois, where the tallest thing on the horizon1 was the water tower. But on Thursday, Viesturs became the only American to climb to the top of the worlds 14 highest mountains.

His last hike was up Mount Annapurna, in Asias snowcapped Himalayas. At 26,545 feet, its peak is the 10th highest in the world. It is the mountain that inspired him to start climbing.

“It tends to be the trickiest, the most dangerous,” said Viesturs, “Theres no simple way to climb it. There are threatening avalanches2 and ice falls that protect the mountain.”

In high school, Viesturs read French climber Maurice Herzogs tale of climbing the icy Annapurna. Herzogs story was of frostbite3 and difficulty and neardeath experiences. Viesturs was hooked right away.
