Diana Ross ( 1944 - ) gained fame as the glamorous lead singer of theSupremes,one of the most successful singing groups in the history of American rockmusic. During the 1960??s,the Supremes became one of the first African Americangroups to gain popularity with both black and white audiences. Ross sang with theSupremes from 1959 until she left the group in 1969 to start a solo career as a singerand motion-picture actress.
Ross was born in Detroit. She began singing with three other girls in high schoolin a group called the Primettes. They changed their name to the Supremes in 1961after signing a record contract with the Tamla Label owned by Berry Gordy,Jr . TheSupremes were a trio consisting of Ross,Mary Wilson,and Florence Ballard. Theyhad their first hit with“Your Heart Belongs to Me”( 1962 ) . From 1964 to 1967 ,theSupremes had 10 hit songs,including“Where Did Our Love Go?”“ Baby Love,”
“ Come See About Me,”“ Stop! In the Name of Love,”and“You Keep Me Hangin??On. ”In 1967,the group changed its name to Diana Ross and the Supremes.
Ross began her solo career late in 1969. She had her first hit with“ Ain??t NoMountain High Enough”( 1971) . Ross made her motion-picture debut in Lady Singsthe Blues ( 1972 ) ,receiving an Academy Award nomination for her performance asjazz singer Billie Holiday. Ross also starred in Ma hogany ( 1976 ) and The Wiz( 1978) . Her recording of the theme from Mahogany,“Do You Know Where You??reGoing To,”became a hit. Ross made several popular rhythm and blues records duringthe early 1980??s. She wrote an autobiography,Secrets of a Spa rrow ( 1993 ) .
In 2000,Ross appeared with the Supremes for the first time in more than 30 yearson the group??s“Return to Love”tour . Ross was the only original member of the trioto appear,however. The other two singers were members of the Supremes who hadjoined the group after Ross left in 1969 .
